Addiction in the United States

Addiction is a catch-all term for the many, many substances which can and do wreak havoc on the lives of our fellow community members. Alcohol, cocaine, opioids, etc, regardless of the substance the root of abuse is a substance use disorder. 21 million Americans have at least one addiction, but only about 10% of them receive any kind of treatment for it. Since the 90s, drug overdose deaths have increased by 300% and from 1999-2017, more than 700,000 Americans died from overdosing.

It’s clear from these statistics that substance use is on the rise in the United States despite the fervent anti-drug campaigns of the 90s and early 2000s. Simply warning people of the dangers of drug use, though important, is clearly not enough. It simply doesn’t treat the various root causes of addiction.

What is a Sober Living Home?

At its most basic, a sober living home is a place where those who are on the path to recovery may stay and enjoy the benefits of having supervision that is conducive to staying sober. When someone has made the difficult first step to getting sober, they are undoubtedly on the roughest part of the road. It hasn’t been long since they last used, they’ve yet to acclimate to the new life they are trying to make for themselves, it is in these conditions that relapses are incredibly common.

Having a place to stay where you are surrounded by those who are facing similar difficulties can be a highly comforting and illuminating experience. If you are an addict who is trying to get clean, living in  “normal” society can be a very alienating and isolating experience—both are feelings that ultimately drive people to addictions. Human beings are social creatures, we do not do well in isolation—which is why solitary confinement is considered a punishment in jails.

A sober living home can do so much to foster the sense of community and solidarity which is so necessary for recovery.

What to Expect With James Club Sober Living

James Club Recovery is a FARR (Florida Association of Recovery Residences) certified spiritually-based recovery residence. It is our firm belief that by combining the efficacy of a 12 step program and a close relationship with a chosen spiritual practice, addiction can be subdued and the addict can once more resume a healthy and fulfilling life. We are first and foremost a community of tolerant individuals that are open to all faiths.

We combat the rigors and traumas that so often come with substance use disorders by fostering a tight-knit community environment. Residents in our program will have the best support system available to them at The James Club. Accountability is highly important to us, but so is encouraging and supporting our fellow residents.

One of the ways we have discovered first-hand as well as have been advised through our faith is performing altruistic acts for the community. Feeding the homeless, volunteering at grocery giveaways, and a variety of other acts of service for our community are things you can take part in. Because we work very closely with the court system, we can also offer assistance with legal issues by advocating on your behalf.

We are one of the few sober living facilities in Broward County that offers long term care with no time restrictions. All of the James Club Recovery program and sober living Fort Lauderdale activities and meetings are held off-site.

Our Sober Living Fort Lauderdale Residences

At each of our sober living Fort Lauderdale facilities, you will enjoy the perks of 24/7 supervision to help keep you accountable as many people find the beginning weeks and months of making a transition into a healthier, sober lifestyle to be the most difficult in terms of avoiding relapse.

We strongly believe that building a firm relationship with your Higher Power is an important anchor that will keep you grounded and have something to turn to when you are struggling or are experiencing a hard time. Our staff and policies will also be there to provide you guidance on the road to recovery. We operate off of a 4-phase program. The initial stages of recovery can be such a difficult time to get through, it will occupy you enough to focus on developing new, healthier ways of coping and spending your time. As such, it may not always be easy to self-reflect on how you are doing. For this reason, we offer bi-weekly program reviews to offer counsel and direction.

The latest research on various mood disorders, addictions, and in general, exercise has been proven to be a medicine of its own kind. Keeping your body healthy is one of the best ways to keep your mind healthy. Our mood is so greatly influenced by how well we feel on a day to day basis. An exercise gym and workout areas are a crucial part of our amenities that we offer. Many of our residents love to visit the gym and help each other get stronger and healthier, not only will it benefit you, but it’s a great way to bond with your fellow brothers and sisters.
